Irish consists of three original melodies created in the style and spirit of traditional Irish music. It opens with a nostalgic, heartfelt melody in the woodwinds accompanied by low brass. This is followed by an energetic Jig, a traditional Irish dance in 6/8 time, that is introduced by flutes and oboes. The third theme, announced by trumpets, is a faster Irish dance in 4/4 called a Reel. As the Reel develops, it is joined by the opening melody in the brass. The two themes coalesce to create the final climax of the work.
