This new setting of Precious Lord, Take my Hand was commissioned by Pearl River Community College and is dedicated to the memory of Medgar Evers. This song was a favorite of Martin Luther King Jr. and was sung at his funeral in April 1968. It was also sung at the state funeral of President Lyndon B. Johnson in January 1973. In this setting, after a short introduction the familiar melody is presented simply with some harmonic enrichment. This is followed by a melodic variation based on the previous harmonies. The melodic variation are then combined as the piece unfolds to a powerful, moving conclusion.
