Buckley Lewis James geb. in Columbus, Ohio, 16. Dezember 1947. Er absolvierte 1969 die Eastman School of Music und trat danach in die Kapelle der US Coast Guard in New London, Connecticut, ein. 1975 übernahm er die musikalische Leitung dieses Orchesters. Als Komponist und Arrangeur schuf er zahlreiche Werke für Blasorchester und Bläser-Ensembles.
