*Pontrefact, 18. Juli 1949. Er absolvierte die Kings School und Leeds Grammar School in seinem Geburtsort, ehe er am Keble College in Oxford inskribierte (1968). Dort wurde Herbert Howells sein Kompositionslehrer. Wilby graduierte 1971 zum Bachelor of Music. Er gehörte danach als Geiger dem Orchester von Covent Garden und dem City of Birmingham Orchestra an und unterrichtet an der University of Leeds.
