De polka was voor Bedrich Smetana de bron van de typische Tsjechische muziek. Hij komt niet alleen in zijn opera's, symfonische werken en kamermuziek, maar ook zelfstandig voor. Pour Bedrich Smetana la polka était la source de la musique typique tchèque et on la retrouve non seulement dans ses opéras, sa musique symphonique et sa musique de chambre mais également toute seule comme composition indépendante. Les premières polkas de Smetana, datant de ses années d'étudiant étaient destinées à la danse, comme par exemple cette polka « Aus dem Studentenleben » (De la vie estudiantine). Il s'agit de musique joyeuse, très variée et typiquement tchèque, écrite pour piano.
