The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartók. In 1945 Bela Bartok described 'Mikrokosmos' as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for 'didactic' purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the 'world of the little ones, the children'. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartók's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up 'Mikrokosmos' are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus (grade 7)

Ce cycle de 153 petites pièces est devenu un classique du répertoire pour piano et pour les cours de piano. Bartók y voyait une série de pièces dans de nombreux styles différents, qui forment ensemble un petit monde à part, le monde des enfants. Du point de vue du style, on retrouve dans ce microcosme l'influence que la musique populaire a eu sur toute l'uvre de Bartók. Les rythmes et les harmonies utilisés permettent à la musique d'être aussi moderne de nos jours qu'à l'époque de sa création. Les 153 pièces du cycle sont parues en six volumes, et organisées selon leur degré de difficultés musicales et techniques. Chaque volume contient une introduction du fils de Bartók, Peter.
