The interesting colors and smooth melodies in the first portion of Heatherwood Portrait uptly set up the more somber chorale which appears later in the piece. Barnes continues to develop the first hteme all the way to the conclusion of the work, where a combination of both themes and a final canonic treatment of the principal theme provides a sophisticated and dramatic ending not often found in works composed at this difficulty level.
