Enuma Elish

Enuma Elish José Suñer Oriola

Enûma Elish is the Babylonian poem that narrates the origin of creation. Enûma Elish (Akkadian: "when on high")

When on high the sky had not been named, there had not been called by a name below the dry land.

Before heaven and earth existed, the salt-water goddess Tiamat and her husband Apsu, the fresh-water god, begat a family of gods, among others Ansar and Kisar. These would beget Anu, who in turn would beget Ea, who would surpass his parents and be unrivalled among the gods.

Many of these new gods, with their shouting and dancing, began to displease Apsu. So Apsu planned to wipe them out, and so he told Tiamat. His wife bitterly lamented this decision: "How can we destroy those whom we have begotten? But Apsu, encouraged by his son and advisor Mummu, decided to carry out his disastrous plan.
