Dit werk begint met een volks-liedachtig thema: een inleiding in mineur. De pauken en zware tonen der lage blaasinstrumenten symboliseren het Hongaarse karakter en de voortdurende strijd die de Hongaren hebben moeten leveren. Daarna komt het thema in volle glorie terug in majeur. Na een korte overgang volgt een sprankelend en rubato dansthema, ook weer afwisselend in mineur en majeur. Na weer een korte overgang komt er een czardas voor orkest met veel virtuoze passages, typerend voor de klaviervirtu-oos Liszt. Het werk wordt glorieus afgesloten met het hoofdthe-ma.

The work opens with a theme in a folksong character: an introduc-tion in minor. Timpani and the low winds symbolise the Hungarian character and the never-ending struggle of the people of Hungary. After this the theme re-appears in its full glory, but now in major. After a short transition a sparkling and rubato dance-theme follows, also alternatingly in minor and major. Another transitional section leads to a czardas for orchestra with much virtuoso passage work, characteristic for the virtuoso Franz Liszt. The work is concluded in a glorious manner by the main theme.

L'introduction se compose d'un thème populaire en mineur. Les coups de timbales et les sonorités pleines des cuivres graves symbolisent le caractère hongrois ainsi que la lutte continue de ce peuple courageux. Le thème initial est repris en toute sa gloire et en majeur cette fois-ci. Après une courte transition s'annonce un thème de danse en 'rubato', alternativement en mineur et en majeur. Après une autre transition l'orchestre en enties interprète une czardas virtuose, typique pour l'exceptionnel pianiste qu'était Franz Liszt. Le thème principal termine l'oeuvre de façon majestueuse.
