Of all the great full-length ballets, three of the most popular have music music by Tchaikovsky: Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky arranged eight excerpts from The Nutcracker into a concert suite, and conducted its first performance in 1892. This arrangement is not a transcription of the entire suite, but is designed to capture the spirit of each movement while reducing it to a programmable length. To help ensure correct stylistic approach, recordings of the entire orchestral suite should be made available to your players.
