The Overture 1812 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed to commemorate the victory of the Russian army over Napoleon's army that year. The composition starts with a religious hymn played by the lower woodwinds; then there is a confrontation between the Marseillaise' and the then Russian national anthem. The work is also famous because of the use of church bells and canons accompanying the Tsar's hymn in the finale.

De Ouverture 1812 van Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikovski werd gecomponeerd ter herinnering aan de Russische overwinning op het leger van Napoleon in 1812. Na een plechtige opening met een kerkelijke hymne die door het lage hout wordt ingezet, worden de Marseillaise en het toenmalige Russische volkslied met elkaar geconfronteerd. Een van de redenen dat het stuk beroemd is geworden is het gebruik van carillon en kanonschoten als begeleiding van de tsarenhymne in de finale.

Die Ouvertüre 1812 von Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikowski wurde zum Andenken an den russischen Sieg über die Napoleonische Armee im Jahre 1812 komponiert. Zuerst hört man eine kirchliche Hymne im tiefen Holzregister und im Laufe der Komposition kommt es zur musikalischen Konfrontation' zwischen der Marseillaise und der damaligen russischen Nationalhymne. Teilweise ist diese Ouvertüre auch bekannt aufgrund des Einsatzes von Glocken und Kanonen, die die zaristische Hymne im Finale begleiten.
