Ireland John Nicholson, geb. in Bowdon, Cheshire, England, 13. August 1879, +Rock Mill, Washington, Sussex, 12. Juni 1962. 1893 bis 1901 studierte er am Royal College of Music in London, an dem er später selbst Komposition unterrichtete. 1904 bis 1926 wirkte er als Organist an der Lukaskirche in Chelsea. Seinem Schülerkreis entstammten B. Britten und E. J. Moeran. Irelands umfangreiches kompositorisches Schaffen geht von der klassisch romantischen Tradition Johannes Brahms' und Antonin Dvoráks aus und nimmt Einflüsse des Impressionismus auf. Neben R. Vaughan Williams zählt er zu den führenden Komponisten Englands in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
