*Ossining, New York, 25. August 1928. Als Schüler von Copland, Persichetti und Petrassi graduierte er 1956 an der Juilliard School zum Master of Arts. Er unterrichtete danach an der Arizona State University (1963/64), an der New York State University in Binghamton (1964 70) und wurde 1971 zum Professor an der University of Texas in Austin ernannt; 1997 emeritiert. Er lebt in Cambridge, New York.
