Nach dem Musikstudium an der Lawrence University und an der De Paul University (Master of Education), unterrichtete er an der Latin School of Chicago. 1989 erfolgte seine Ernennung zum Blasorchesterdirigenten an der Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. 1992 begann er das Doktoratsstudium bei Eugene Corporon an der University of Cincinnati.
