Appledorn Mary Jeanne van, geboren in Holland, Michigan, 2. Oktober 1927. Sie erwarbdas Master of Music-Diplom 1950 und das Doktor-Diplom 1966 je weils an der Eastman School of Music, wo sie u. a. Komposition bei Bernard Rogers und Alan Hovhaness studierte. Ihre Kompositionen wurden vielfach ausgezeichnet. Seit 1950 gehört sie dem Lehrkörper der Texas Tech University an, derzeit (1987) als Professorin und Direktorin der Abteilung für Musiktheorie und Komposition.
